Photon counters enable the detection of photons in an APD module. These devices can operate in two basic modes: counting mode (APD Module SPAD), which allows for counting photons in a certain range, or continuous reading mode, which can perform continuous counting.

  • Since APD modules are often used in applications requiring high sensitivity and speed, photon counters are also used in such applications. For example, photon counters and APD modules can be used together in applications such as quantum encryption, neuroscience, remote sensing, medical imaging, and single-photon microscopy.
