EMBARGO LED TO DOMESTIC PRODUCTION

How was Quark Optical established?

In 2018, at the institution where I worked, we were importing the APD module from Japan. However, due to a political embargo extending to Japan, we could no longer import the module. Relying on our experience in Defense Industry Presidency (SSB) projects, we decided to produce the module ourselves. The tests took two years, and we succeeded in the end. During this process, we completed our incubation training at Bahçeşehir University (BAU) HUB. Right after being accepted into the TÜBİTAK 1512 Young Entrepreneur Support Program, we established our company last year at the Technopark Istanbul Incubation Center.

What do you produce?

Until a few years ago, we used to import the APD Module, SPAD Module, Gateway Underwater Sound Speed Sensor, and Time Digital Converters. Now we produce them domestically. Quark Optical has positioned itself as a company producing competitive and niche solutions in the electro-optical sector.

What is the importance of the APD module?

APD modules allow the rapid, simple, and highly accurate detection and transmission of very low light levels in various applications such as laser radar, telemetering, data transfer, or biomedical analysis. APDs are also known as avalanche photodiodes. They convert optical data, i.e., light passing through fiber cables, into electrical frequency. In low light levels, they produce highly sensitive signals even in environments that are dark for the human eye.

In which areas are they used?

They have a wide range of uses in sectors such as fiber optic communication, laser scanning, industrial automation, remote sensing, the health sector, and space research.

UNIQUE FEATURES

What are your superior aspects compared to your competitors?

It has a small, compact, and modular structure. Users can change sensors according to project requirements. Thanks to our flexible designs, we broke the monopoly of foreign companies in the field of modules and sensors. This module allows users to integrate and use sensors of different brands and specifications (bandwidth, frequency, etc.) with each other. Additionally, when connected via USB, the module can be configured from the computer through the user interface, and some data can be examined. These features are not present in the APD modules of our two global competitors, who are manufacturers of modules and sensors. Moreover, our structure is much more cost-effective than theirs.

"In the field of optical consumable materials, we have localized 97 materials in 27 subcategories. It is possible to make high-precision measurements and accurate experiments with these materials used in every industry and laboratory. Each of these is a competitive product in its field, providing a significant gain for our country with the import substitution they provide."
